Matt Mochary President and Founder
After graduating from Yale University in 1990 with a BA in Humanities, Matt worked for his family’s real estate investment and management company in Minneapolis, MN. During his four years in Minneapolis, he attended and eventually became the General Manager of the inner-city Calvary Baptist Church. Matt spent many pro-bono hours fundraising to keep the doors of Calvary open, as the church provided a much-needed sanctuary for residents of its embattled neighborhood. In addition, during this same time, Matt took a two-month sabbatical each summer to teach for the Pacific Crest Outward Bound School (California, Oregon and Washington), where he guided youth-at-risk students on 28-day mountaineering courses. Both of these experiences of giving time and effort to the community created in Matt a deep sense of satisfaction.
When Matt chose to go to the Kellogg business school at Northwestern University in 1994, he knew there would be little time to continue his work in the community. This time became even scarcer when he joined the venture capital firm Spectrum Equity Investors (Menlo Park, CA) in 1996.
In 1999, Matt, along with co-founder Michael Carrier, started the technology services company Totality (San Francisco, CA). Totality’s success has given Matt the financial and time flexibility to return to his earlier commitment to community. The Mochary Foundation represents this return.
