Newburgh Boxing Club

Newburgh BoxerThe Newburgh Boxing Club services youth between the ages of 6-18 years old who live in the city of Newburgh, New York and its surrounding communities. Located in the downtown area of Newburgh, where a large portion of the residents are either at or below the poverty line, Newburgh Boxing Club fills a lack that many of the local youth have for structured, life-affirming programs. The Newburgh Boxing Club provide these youth with daily activities, as well as monthly and yearly field trips based on physical exercise, discipline, education and fun. At NBC, youth learn commitment, self-respect, respect for authority and build positive relationships with their peers in an environment where gangs are ever-present outside the gym doors (article). Aside from the physical activities and opportunity to compete locally and nationally, youth are also given one-on-one time and tutoring with their schoolwork everyday before they hit the gym, as well as weekly “chores” to keep the gym clean and safe for continued use. The gym is open seven days a week from noon-8pm.

Raymond Rivera, Head Coach and Executive Director of Newburgh Boxing Club

Having lost his son, a promising boxer, to street violence , Mr. Rivera wanted to provide a safe haven for “at-risk” youth while putting his passion for boxing to good use. With fourteen years experience and dedication to the sport, Ray has designed a positive atmosphere and a unique learning environment that attracts and retains many at-risk adolescents.
